Phishing
Detect and Avoid Phishing Scams
Phishing is a deception tactic that tricks people into revealing sensitive information or installing computer malware such as viruses, adware or ransomware.
Example: A target is contacted by email, telephone or text message by a fraudster posing as a personal contact or on behalf of a legitimate organization or business. The objective is to deceive people into providing sensitive data, such as:
- Account numbers
- Addresses
- Banking/credit card details
- Username/passwords
Recognizing Phishing Attempts:
- Urgent call to action or threat from the fraudster
- Incorrect spelling or grammar
- Unknown or infrequent email senders or “External” senders
- Generic or informal email greeting
- Suspicious or mismatched email domain
What to do if you are the victim of a phishing attack:
- Document details of the attack — note usernames, account numbers, passwords, etc., communicated during the attack
- Change passwords and sensitive account information immediately
- Adopt multi-factor authentication
- Notify your company’s IT department and describe the attack in detail
- Contact bank, credit card company and/or other entities privy to sensitive information
