Ransomware
Ransomware is a type of malware that prevents users from accessing a device and the data stored on it, usually by encrypting computer files. During this process, the user’s computer may become locked and/or the data on it may be stolen or deleted. Once encrypted, a criminal group will demand a ransom in exchange for decryption.
Below are possible actions to take that may protect against potential ransomware attacks:
- Use antivirus software at all times
- Block websites that are known to be malicious
- Restrict or prohibit access to official networks from personally owned devices
- Avoid using personal applications and websites — like email, chat and social media from work computers
- Don’t open files or click on links from unknown sources unless an antivirus scan is run
- Use a VPN for remote access to services such as Software as a Service (SaaS) or other services exposed to the internet
- Install security updates as soon as they become available to fix exploitable bugs
Below are possible actions to take to prepare for potential ransomware attacks:
- Make regular backups of important files
- Make multiple copies of files using different backup solutions and storage locations
- Make sure devices containing backup data are not permanently connected to a network
- Scan backups for malware before restoring files
A ransomware attack can adversely affect the operating capability of an organization. Businesses that are ill-prepared for such an attack could spend days or weeks to return to full operating capacity. Aside from the operations of the business, a ransomware attack can also affect an organization’s revenue stream, reputation and data integrity, among other repercussions.
